Master of Medicine (Family Medicine)

OVERVIEW

The Masters of Medicine (Family Medicine) was started in 2011 after received an accreditation by The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) . This programme is an on-job postgraduate training programme for a minimum of 4 years and a maximum of 7 years. It aims at producing a competent family medicine specialist.
 
The Masters of Medicine (Family Medicine) programme aims:
  1. to produce a Family Medicine Specialist that would be able to manage patients competently in primary care.
  2. to produce a Family Medicine Specialist who is able to conduct research and implement evidence based medicine in primary care.
  3. to produce a Family Medicine Specialist that has good leadership skills in practice management in primary care.
  4. to produce a Family Medicine Specialist who is insightful with resources and pro-active to the needs of primary health care.
 
This programme is implemented in 3 phases: phase I (year 1) and phase II (year 2 & 3) and phase III (year 4). It is currently conducted as an open system.

Phase I runs for one (1) year which covers 3 major postings of pathology: Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatric. Candidates will undergo training at the accredited ministry of health hospitals. At the end of phase I, candidates will sit for the part I Professional exam. The candidates will need to obtain a pass in the theory paper before being allowed to sit for the clinical part. The candidates must obtain a pass in all the papers before they can proceed to Phase II of the programme.

Phase II of the programme is of two (2) years duration. During the second year, they need to undergo 11 compulsory minor clinical postings, 1 elective posting and 1 research methods course. Candidate will be posted to MOH accredited hospitals during this time. During third year, candidates will undergo clinical training in Government Health Clinics, KKM and Family Medicine Clinic HPUPM on rotation basis. At the end of phase II, candidates must obtain a pass in the part II professional examination before being allowed to progress to year 4.

Candidates in year 4 will continue the family medicine training at the public health clinics. Candidates are required to submit and pass a thesis dissertation, a family case report and a clinical practice diary prior to the professional examination at the end of phase III. They are required to pass the Professional exam III in order to be awarded the Master of Medicine (Family Medicine).

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

PHASE I: YEAR 1

- Tertiary Training: Clinical Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O & G), and Pediatrics.

-Contractors clinical case reports (1 case commentary)

-Professional -Examination Phase I ( Theory 60% and Clinical 40%)

PHASE II: YEAR 2 & YEAR 3

- Tertiary Training: Clinical Family Medicine: Surgery, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Trauma and Anxiety, Dermatology, Radiology, Infectious Diseases, Rehabilitation Medicine, Geriatric Psychiatry, Palliative Medicine / Sports Medicine, Introduction to Research Methodology.

-Clinical Family Medicine Training at primary health clinics.

-Examination Clinical Phase II (Theory 40% and Clinical 60%)

PHASE III: YEAR 4

-Training In the clinic as of Family Physicians in training under supervision.

-Research project starts from Year 3.

-Preparation of clinical report cases (2 family case study).

-Preparation of dissertation report.

-Phase III Clinical Examination

  

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must meet the following conditions:

1. Malaysian citizen.

2. Possessed MBBS, MBBCh, MD or its equivalent from a recognized university. 

3. Fully registered with the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC). 
 
4. Has served as Medical Officer not less than 3 years.

5. Fulfill the admission requirements set by the University.
