INTRODUCTION

This Bachelor of Science (Environmental and Occupational Health) was first initiated in year 1998 with the first batch of students graduated in year 2001. 

This program encompasses fundamental and integrated knowledge in the field of Sciences, Health Sciences, Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Community Health. Students are exposed to various learning techniques in order to maximize their learning potential.

Methods of learning includes lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory sessions, self-directed learning, case studies, computer-assisted learning, field work, practical training and industrial attachment in government and private agencies, presentations, course work as well as scientific research projects.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

STPM Candidate Minimum Requirements

University General Requirements

  1. Passed the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM);
  2. Pass with credits in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia at SPM / equivalent level;
  3. Pass the STPM level by getting at least;
    1. Grade C (CGPA 2.00) General Studies subjects; and
    2. Grade C (CGPA 2.00) in two (2) other subjects.
  4. Obtained at least Level 3 (Band 3) in Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 

Special Program Requirements 

  1. At least Grade B (CGPA 3.00) in Biology subject at STPM level and Honors in Chemistry subject at SPM level; or
  2. At least Grade B (CGPA 3.00) in Chemistry at STPM and Honors level in Biology at SPM level.

 

Minimum Requirements for KPM Matriculation / Foundation Science UM and UPM

University General Requirements

  1. Passed the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM);
  2. Pass with credits in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia at SPM / equivalent level;
  3. Graduated MOE Matriculation / Foundation Science with at least CGPA 2.00;
  4. Earn at least Level 3 (Band 3) in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET).

 

Special Program Requirements

  1. Matriculation of Life Sciences / Physical Science
  2. At least Grade B (3.00) in Biology subjects and credits in Chemistry at SPM level; Or
  3. At least Grade B (3.00) in Chemistry subjects and honors in Biology subjects at SPM level.

 

Minimum Requirements of Equivalent

University General Requirements

  1. Passed the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM);
  2. Pass with credits in Bahasa Melayu / Bahasa Malaysia at SPM / equivalent level;
  3. Has a Diploma or other equivalent qualification recognized by the Government of Malaysia and approved by the Senate of the University;
  4. Obtained at least Level 3 (Band 3) in the Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

 

Special Program Requirements 

  1. Diploma in appropriate fields or other qualifications recognized by the UPM Senate; Or
  2. Diploma in Nursing, Environmental Health, Engineering, Biology and Chemistry recognized by the UPM Senate; Or
  3. Candidates serving in Health Services (such as Assistant Environmental Health Officers, Medical Assistants and Nurses from the Ministry of Health Malaysia and recognized by the Senate, UPM must meet the following requirements: -
    1. Has SPM Certificate and passed Mathematics and Science;
    2. Have Certificate in the relevant field;
    3. Have at least 5 years’ experience in Environmental Health Sciences

In line with the mission and vision of UPM, this degree program aims:

  • To produce professionals with comprehensive knowledge and skills in environmental and occupational health;
  • To produce creative and innovative graduates who are creative, innovative and sensitive to environmental and occupational health issues in communities, and responsible to the nation;
  • To produce graduates who are capable of improving quality of life by making appropriate decisions and policies based on research; and
  • To produce graduates who are able to conduct high quality research and consultancy at national and international levels.

 

CAREER INFORMATION

With the recognition of graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Environment and Occupational Health) program, UPM which has been gazetted under the Act 514 (Occupational Safety and Health Act) by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, the Ministry of Human Resources as a competent Occupational Safety and Health Officer, Have a great career opportunity either in the public or private sector. Graduates can also pursue tertiary education either at home or abroad. Among the job opportunities include the field of Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Monitoring and Control, Education and Training, Consultancy, Management and Entrepreneurship. Generally, career opportunities for graduates can be listed as below:

PROGRAM RECOGNITION

Certification by The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Malaysia

Graduates are certified competent to be registered as Safety and Health Officer with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health after 3 years’ experience in the field of Safety and Health. In addition, graduates are exempted from the Chemical Health Risk Assessment training and proceed directly to the competency exam as a chemical health risk assessor.

Accreditation by Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) UK

This accreditation enables graduates to seek employment in environmental and public health fields in local governments, central government and its agencies and across the private sector in the international arena. A CIEH accredited degree is recognized around the world in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Malaysia, Oman, Singapore and the USA.
