Academic Programme

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME

The Bachelor of Science (Environmental and Occupational Health) is a public health professional training that emphasizes on safety, disease prevention and injuries relating to environmental and occupational aspects. This programme was initiated in 1997 and up till now, seventeen (17) batches of students has enroled from various educational backgrounds up until year 2012. Environmental health is a health sciences discipline which is related to the control of biological, chemical and physical process and the social environment which could cause adverse effects directly or indirectly to physical health and mental well-being. Occupational Health is focused on the identification, control and evaluation of the processes in the workplace environment that may cause injury, disability, disease and well-being disturbance among workers. Through this course, students will pursue competency training in identifying health problems relating to the workplace and its environment. The control measures are through prevention and health promotion.

This programme has been accredited by a few local and international organizations. These organizations are the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) from United Kingdom, Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) from Malaysia. For DOSH, graduated students will be given the Safety and Health Officer (SHO) Greenbook after three-years of working experience, while NIOSH exempts our graduated students from sitting for the Chemical Health Risk Assessment (CHRA) exam.


1. GOAL OF THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Bachelor of Science (Environmental and Occupational Health) encompasses a comprehensive curriculum which produces graduates who are well-trained and professional in the field of environmental and occupational health and occupational safety and health as well as high quality of research and consultancy in related areas.

The goals of the program are:

  1. To produce graduates with the knowledge and expertise in community health care through the preservation and enhancement of the environment and the workplace as well as quality of life in community.
  2. To produce graduates who are creative, innovative and responsive to community environmental health problems, workplace values ​​and culture of the country.
  3. To produce graduates who are highly skilled and being able to handle high quality research and consultancy at national and international level.

The goals of this program are in line with UPM's mission; to contribute to human advancement in line with the university for producing quality graduates who are competitive and able to contribute to the development of a healthy and productive society.

2. LEARNING OUTCOMES

Graduates are expected able to:

  1. Acquire knowledge about changes in the biological, chemical, physical, and social environment that predispose humans to disease in the environment and workplace. (P1)
  2. Acquire technical skills and applications in the field of Environmental and Occupational Health of the multi-disciplinary nature. (P2)
  3. Acquire scientific thinking skills in Basic Sciences (Organic Chemistry, Physiology, Microbiology) to understand etiology of diseases and hazards in the environment and workplace. (P3)
  4. Acquire communication skills in the field of Environmental and Occupational Health through the exposure of industrial training, internship, final year project, the presentation of case studies and seminars. (P4)
  5. Attain required social skills through exposure in the field and courses of Environmental and Occupational Health, Social Sciences, Industrial Training, Final Year Research Project and Seminar. (P5)
  6. Acquire professional skills in the field of Environmental and Occupational Health and the high ethical duties as Environmental Health Officer, Environmental Control Officer and the Occupational Health and Safety Officer. (P6)
  7. Provide graduates with the lifelong knowledge and be able to manage information of the relationship between humans and the environment by applying the principles of occupational health and the environment by designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating intervention programs or health services professionally. (P7)
  8. Provide graduates with entrepreneurial skills through exposure to business management tools and basic techniques as a Consultant in the field of Occupational and Environmental Health field. (P8)
  9. Provide graduates withleadership through exposure to extra-curricular programs, industrial training and teamwork through courses offered by the faculty. (P9)
