BACKGROUND
Welcome to the Department of Surgery, Faculty of Medical and Health Science (FPSK). The department was founded in 1998 when the first group of postgraduate students entered their clinical phase.
Back in 2001, the department was initially located at level 1 and 2 Blok Pertama, Nursing College Complex, Hospital Kuala Lumpur. At that time, the first floor consisted of the department's office and the lecturers' offices (general surgery, anaesthesiology and opthalmology unit) whilst the second floor consisted of the orthopaedic and the otolaryngology unit. This department was then led by Professor Madya Dr Fahmi Abdul Karim (5 July 1999 until 30 June 200) and later followed by Professor Dr Yunus Gul (1 July 2000 until 31 May 2002).
After the appointment of Professor Yunus as the Deputy Dean, Dato' Professor Selvarajah was designated as the head of department until 14 march 2003. The post was later succeeded by Professor Madya Dr Yushak Abdul Wahab (until 12 October 2004), Professor Dr Liew Ngoh Chin (until June 2011), and currently Professor Madya Dr Mohd Faisal Jabar (June 2011 until present) is the Head of Surgical Department in FPSK.
There are four unit(s) in the department:

- Otorhynolaryngology unit
- Ophthalmology unit
The department is currently based at Level 4 FPSK, and our clinical campus is also located at level 10B, Grand Seasons Hotel, Jalan Pahang Kuala Lumpur.

Research
Research remains one of the important aspects in our department. Lecturers in the Department of Surgery are actively conducting studies related to their main field of interest. Some of the researches that are ongoing:
