HEAD OF PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT
Dr. Norhafizah Mohtarrudin
BACKGROUND
The Department of Pathology was originally set up as the Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Established on 1st May 1999, it was initially composed of 7 units including Histopathology, Hematology, Chemical Pathology, Immunology, Microbiology, Parasitology and Radiology. Following restructuring into clinical and pre-clinical units, the Radiology unit was then placed under Department of Medicine. On 1st June 2006, the Department of Pathology was formed and it now consists of Histopathology, Hematology, Chemical Pathology and Immunology units.

POSTGRADUATE
Pathology is the study (logos) of disease (pathos). It addresses cause/etiology, mechanisms of development (pathogenesis), structural alterations of cells (morphologic changes), and the consequences of changes (clinical manifestations). The Masters of Pathology programme is based on apprenticeship. This programme requires candidates to fulfill both coursework as outlined by the department, and clinical duties as assigned. The general objective in Part I is to attain basic knowledge and practical competence in General Pathology. Part II is to acquire consultant level skills in evaluation, interpretation and advice on diagnostic laboratory procedures, acquire skills on total quality management of diagnostic services and also to acquire competence to complete a simple research project.

Chemical Pathology
Overview
Chemical pathology is a branch of pathology which involves the analysis and interpretation of biochemical tests for screening, diagnosis, management and prevention of diseases. This field discusses the biochemical changes in a wide range of substances in blood and body fluids such as glucose, enzymes, hormones, minerals, ions, RNA, DNA and others in order to understand the etiology, pathophysiology and progression of a disease. It also encompasses fundamental biochemistry research of the structure, composition and chemical reactions of substances in living systems giving emphasis on the development, evaluation and validation of new technologies. Research in this area may include but not limited to pharmacology, physiology, microbiology, molecular biology, immunochemistry, neurochemistry, bioinorganic, bioorganic and biophysical chemistry. This program awards students with a Master or Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Pathology on completion of the necessary credit hours as stipulated by the Graduate School as well as on successfully passing the thesis of a research.

Immunology
Overview
Members of the Immunology unit are involved in researches to advance understanding and knowledge of the role of the immune system in health and disease. In cancer, neurodegenerative disease and allergy where inflammation has been identified as a major factor in pathogenesis, if not etiology, much fundamental work has been carried out and there is continued effort to put these into publication. Members are also interested in discovering preventive and therapeutic alternatives for the treatment of these diseases, testing a wide range of methodologies from natural extracts (of local herbs, microbial products, fruits, and vitamins) to stem cell therapies and immunotherapy. Another area of interest is in identifying biomarkers in various cancers.
Research Area
- Mechanisms of drug resistance and relapse in acute leukaemias
- Effects of fruits and herbs on the healthy immune system
- Immune dysregulation and symptom severity in allergic rhinitis
- Immunomodulatory activity of human mesenchymal stem cells
- Anti-tumourigenic effect of human mesenchymal stem cells
- Effect of herbal treatment in diabetes induced immune dis-regulation
- Isolation and characterisation of human mesenchymal stem cells from various post natal tissues

Histopathology
Overview
Members of Histopathology Unit are actively involved in various types of research. Our aims are • to enhance the understanding of pathogenesis of diseases. • to discover novel prognostic and diagnostic biomarkers in diseases. • to make recommendation for the prognostic algorithm, diagnosis and novel therapeutic targets for diseases based on the research findings.

- Dr Norhafizah Mohtarrudin (Cancer and Cardiovascular research)
Haematology
Overview
Members of the Haematology Unit are involved in researches involving the advancement of knowledge of the haematology field primarily in thalassaemia and platelet and haemostasis research. In thalassaemia research, the focus of the research group includes determination of frequencies of different thalassaemia genes, their molecular genetics nature including gene modifiers that affect clinical manifestation, design simple cost-effective and practical protocols/algorithms for screening and definitive laboratory diagnosis of thalassaemia, determining the efficacy of cord blood haemopoietic stem cell transplantation and studying the effects of microRNAs of Hb subtypes and erythropoiesis in thalassaemia. Platelet and haemostasis area has many potential research questions which are fundamental in understanding mechanism of various diseases, differences in therapeutic response and discovering natural products with potential medicinal properties. The work in platelet & haemostasis has potential s to be translated into personalized medicine in future based on the progress in the genomic and proteomic era in current scientific era.
Research Area
