Obstetric and Gynaecology

HEAD OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY DEPARTMENT
BACKGROUND
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) was a part of the Department of Human Growth and Development. In its early establishment, the department consisted of three main academic units namely
- Paediatrics Unit
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit
- Clinical Genetics Unit
It was established in 1998 to cater the first batch of clinical students enrolled in faculty. On June 1, 2006, the department was split into two independent departments and renamed into Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Department of Paediatrics. To date, the Clinical Genetics Unit remains as a part of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Since the establishment of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the department performs clinical teaching for Year 4 and Year 5 clinical students enrolled in the medical doctor programme, which takes place at Kuala Lumpur Hospital and Kajang Hospital. Owing to its rapid development, in 2006, the department moved to a new faculty building located next to the Serdang Hospital and started to run O&G clinics including various specialized laboratory services such as gynaecology and fetomaternal, infertility test and intrauterine insemination (IUI). These services are conducted at the Reproductive and Research Centre (Level 6, Block D, FMHS, UPM).
The department is also involved in teaching Year 1 pre-clinical students as well as research graduates (Master and PhD) on subjects related to genetics. The teaching is conducted via the Clinical Genetics Unit. The unit also administers a research laboratory called Medical Genetics Laboratory (Level 6, Block B, FMHS, UPM), whereby its members are actively involved in various researches related to cancer genetics and therapy, gene therapy, stem cell biology and neurobiology/genetics. Currently, the laboratory accommodates as many as 30 research graduates at Master and PhD levels.

Academic
Undergraduate
Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology plays a pivotal role to jointly offer the Medical Doctor Programme with other clinical departments in the faculty. Although the department does not administer the programme directly, it coordinates various courses and modules pertaining to obstetrics, gynaecology and genetics. More information regarding the Medical Doctor Programme offered by the faculty can be accessed from the Academic Programme website.
The department offers the following modules for the Medical Doctor programme:
- SPP3241: Gene Expression (Year 1)
The course encompasses structure and functions of genes, mechanisms of DNA replication, mRNA transcription, gene splicing and protein translation, mutations and mutagenic agents and their influence on DNA and cell and aspects on application of molecular biology techniques in clinical diagnostics.
- SPP3251: Human Genetics (Year 1)
This course encompasses fundamental concepts and technological advances in the study of human genetics pertaining to medical practice which include cytogenetics, molecular genetics, biochemical genetics, clinical genetics, ethical issues and genetic counseling.
- SPK3511: Obstetrics and Gynaecology (After passing Year 3)
This course encompasses common clinical situations such as antenatal problems, postpartum problem, maternal and perinatal mortality, benign and malignant gynaecological diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, infertility, contraception and menopause, interpretation of clinical symptoms and signs, differential diagnosis, and plan management.
- SPK3512: Senior Obstetrics and Gynaecology (After passing Year 4)
The course encompasses history taking and physical examination of obstertrics and gynaecology patients, rational approach on investigation and management of clinical problems, therapeutic aspects and therapeutic procedures in the clinics, wards and operation theatres.
Graduate
The department administers students for graduate degree by research at Master (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) levels. Information on academic and programme requirements for a successful enrollment is accessible from the School of Graduate Studies, UPM.
Graduate students in the department perform researches leading to one of the following field of studies or specializations:
- Molecular Biology
- Genetics
- Human Genetics
- Molecular Medicine
- Neuroscience (In review)
- Stem Cell (In review)
The department offers two graduate courses for MSc and PhD candidates:
- HGD5502: Medical Genetics (Semester 1 with 3 credits)
- HGD5509: Special Topics in Human Genetics (Semester 2 with 3 credits)
Professional Master of Medicine (Obstetrics and Gynaecology)
The department plans to offer the professional graduate program, Master of Medicine (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) in the near future. The programme will also gain recognition and accreditation from various governing/professional bodies.
