HEAD OF PSYCHIATRY DEPARTMENT
BACKGROUND
The Department of Psychiatry was previously known as the Unit of Psychiatry under the Medical Department. The first Head of Unit was Dr. Nik Shaliza Hussin, followed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Brian Ho Kong Wai after Dr. Nik Shaliza took leave for her subspecialty training.
The Unit of Psychiatry was upgraded to the Department of Psychiatry on the 1st of June 2006. At that time, the department only has a Professor, an Associate Professor, 6 academic officers, a tutor and an administrative assistant. The department office, which operated at Level 8, Grand Season Avenue, was then moved to Level 10B in the same building on the July of 2007. Apart from the Grand Season Clinical Campus, the department has a general office at Level 3, Block C, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences UPM Serdang.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Brian Ho Kong Wai served as the first Head of Department of Psychiatry from 1st of June 2006 – 31st of May 2009, followed by Dr. Bharathi S. Vengadasalam as the second Head of Department. Dr. Bharathi served as the Head of Department from 1st of June 2009 untill 31st of May 2011, and extended her service to the 30th of September 2011 as the Acting Head of Department, before she passes on to Dr. Hamidin Awang whom will be serving the position stating from the 1st of October 2011 for a priod of 3 years.
Other than focusing on administration, training and education, the department also runs Psychitric Clinics in Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), Insititut Pediatrik HKL and Klinik Pakar Porta Kabin Hospital Kajang, which have been operating since July 2005. The Department also provides services to the psychiatric ward in Hospital Kajang since early September 2011.

This course encompasses fundamental knowledge and clinical aspects of psychiatric disorders, interview techniques and history taking, recognition of symptoms of major psychiatric disorders and understanding of factors contributing to the cause of mental illness, case formulation and management
Senior Psychiatry
(This course encompassses psychosocial aspects of physical illnesses through liaison psychiatry, managing dying patients and handle cases in emergency psychiatry. It also covers the concept of liason psychiatry and emphasises on the role of multidisciplinary teams in managing patients and in the development of Liason Psychiatry services in hospitals.)
Research
Overview
Mental health and behavioural science research areas have become important fields in medicine. Research in these areas has focused on the holistic approach of managing people with mental health problems and promoting mental health well being. In addition, it also observes the relationship between mental health and behavioural science in the prevention of mental health problems. The approach is mainly based on the biopsychosocial aspects of mental well being.
A behavioural science lab has been allocated for the conduct of many research activities apart from performing them at field works. There is involvement of members who are from different areas of expertise (psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, primary care physician). It is hopeful that the research area would
- improve health services in mental health area
- equip lecturers with essential knowledge in mental health research
- increase the capacity building of expertise in mental health research
- fulfill the needs of becoming a centre of excellence in the mental health area
