BACKGROUND
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia was formed in 1996, while the Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH) Unit was established in 1997 under the Department of Nutrition and Community Health. This unit was later placed under the Department of Community Health which was set up in 1999. In 2002, the unit was separated into two, namely the Environmental Health and Occupational Safety and Health units. In 2009, the units were again combined and renamed as the Environmental and Occupational Health Science Unit.
The department was officially launched in November of 2011, with Professor Dr Zailina Hashim as its first Head of Department.
At the moment, the department consists of 11 academic and 4 supporting staff. It is expected that, by the year 2015, the number of academic staff would increase to 30 with the appointment of Professors (3), Associate Professors (4), Senior Lecturers (13), and Tutors (10). In addition, the number of support staff is expected to increase to 10.

Long-term strategy of the Department
1. Quality Education
To improve the quality of teaching, research and consultancy by focusing on professional training of staff at local or foreign universities
2. Linkages
Fostering cooperation and professional networking among units, departments, local and international universities, Ministry of Health (MOH), Department of Safety and Occupational Health (JKKP), National Institute for Occupational and Safety Health (NIOSH), Department of Environment (JAS), Alam Sekitar Malaysia (ASMA), Road Transport Department (RTD) and other government and private agencies.
3. Collaboration with various faculties in UPM and also with other universities.
Collaboration with foreign universities provided linkages by previous PhD students (tutor) such as University of Aberdeen, University of Sydney and University of East Anglia, Norwich.
4. Short and Long-Term Courses
Short courses offered are those ranging from 1 month to 1 year. Courses leading to the degree of Doctor of Philosophy are offered in areas such as Environmental Radiation, Management of Toxic Waste, Food Safety and Environmental Toxicology. Courses for post-doctoral degrees are also offered in special areas according to the candidate's field of expertise.

National, International and Regional project, for EOH field will be continued which covers almost all areas in the field of environmental and occupational health. This is aimed at maintaining publication numbers and increasing citation index per academic staff.

Academic
1. Undergraduate
The Bachelor of Science (Environmental and Occupational Health) is a public health professional training that emphasizes on safety, disease prevention and injuries relating to environmental and occupational aspects. This programme was started in 1997 and up till now, has taken in seventeen (17) batches of students from various educational backgrounds. Environmental health is a health sciences discipline which is related to the control of biological, chemical and physical process and the social environment which could cause adverse effects directly or indirectly to physical health and mental well-being. Occupational Health is focused on the identification, control and evaluation of the processes which result from the workplace environment that may cause injury, disability, disease and well-being disturbance among worker. Through this course, students will pursue competency training in identifying health problems relating to the workplace and its environment. The prior control measures are through prevention and health promotion.
This programme has been accredited by a few organizations, both locally and internationally. They are the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) from the United Kingdom, Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, both from Malaysia. For DOSH, graduated students are given the SHO Greenbook after three-years working experience, while NIOSH exempts students from sitting for the Chemical Health Risk Assessment or CHRA exam.

Professional Services
Contributions in the professional services sector by members of the department are as follows:
1. Occupational Safety and Health consultation and services for government agencies and private companies
2. Environmental Health Consultancy
Consultation in improving the environmental health issues by conducting related assessment, e.g. Environmental Impact Assessment (component of health by providing Environmental Health Impact Assessment), environmental health monitoring and analysis (i.e. environmental noise, air and water monitoring), and other environmental health study on the effect of environmental factors.
3. Occupational Safety and Health Consultancy
Consultation in improving the health and safety aspects in UPM – a long term programme in enhancing and achieving competencies of occupational health practices in UPM. For example, environmental, health and safety training programme, hazard surveillance, industrial hygiene, water monitoring, ergonomic assessment, and health risk assessment.
