BACKGROUND
The Department of Medicine was founded in 1998, when the first batch of medical students started the clinical program. The department is currently headed by Associate Professor Dr. Norashikin Shamsudin, who is also a Consultant Dermatologist.
The department is currently based in the UPM Main Campus, adjacent to Hospital Serdang and the Clinical Campus located at Level 10B, Grand Season Avenue, Jalan Pahang, Kuala Lumpur.

BACHELOR OF NURSING
RESEARCH AND STATISTICS : NUR3001
This course includes both qualitative approaches to nursing research. The design is specially focused to: i) introduce students to the core elements of the research process and the philosophical traditions of research inquiry; ii) to assist in the development of competence in the critical and evaluation of nursing and health related research.
CARE OF TE CRITICAL CLIENTS : NUR3504
This course aims to provide students with the appropriate knowledge, skills and the attitudinal development in preparation for practice in critical care environments. It focuses on nursing care of children and adults who suffer life threatening health problems. The application of knowledge an skills to the clinical settings is also included.
PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT II : NUR3302
This course is designed to orientate students to the characteristics of contemporary nursing practice in Malaysia and that of the wider global context. Students are encouraged to explore and analyze past and current beliefs and practices which have shaped the historical development of nursing, locally and at international levels. Core professional nursing concepts and processes will be explored. BASIC PATHOLOGY,
MICROBIOLOGY AND PARASITOLOGY : NUR3103
i) Pathology This course introduces the students to the study of abnormal physiology of the body system that may cause diseases. Included are other disruptions that may result in imbalance of body systems, tumors, fluid and electrolyte imbalance and how these disruptions can be applied to nursing
ii) Microbiology This course deals with practical and theoretical aspects of microbiology. It discusses general characteristics for some important pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi and host parasite relationship with human diseases. Technique of collecting, handling, processing and testing of clinical specimen are also included.
iii) Parasitology This couse introduces the students to biological agents causing or transmitting diseases, namely, helminths, protozoa and anthropods which are common in Malaysia. Lectures will cover classification, treatment and principles of control and prevention of diseases caused by these parasites. In the practical sessions, you will be introduced to the principles and practice of diagnostic parasitology.
BASIC BIOCHEMISTRY AND PHARMACOLOGY : NUR3102
i) Biochemistry This course introduces the students to the major components and characteristics of biochemical process occuring in living system. The topics introduced include:
(a) physico –chemical properties and functions of carbohydrates (b) protein (c) lipid and nucleic acid (d) enzymology (e) bioenergetics (f) integration and control of metabolisme of carbohydrates (g) nucleic acids in genetics and reproduction (h) biochemical nature of membranes (Ii) hormones and their function.
ii) Pharmacology Basic concepts of pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetics are included. Informations of currently use drug to treat infection and disorder of various system of the body is introduced. This included the application of nursing process in drug.
HEALTH ASSESSMENT I : NUR3205
This course exposes the students to practice a range of nursing skills pertaining to health assessment which forms the basis for therapeutic interventions. Development of knowledge and skills are facilitated by simulated learning in the skill laboratory and in clinical based settings in hospitals. Comprehensive skill development in health assessment enables student to demonstrate problem solving skills, critically provide and justify a plan of care for the clients.
CARE OF THE SICK CHILD : NUR3503
This course provides the students with the theoretical and clinical knowledge for pediatric nursing practice. It addresses the needs of pediatric clients from birth to the age of twelve year. Students are given the opportunity to apply theoretical concepts and skills to the care of infants and children with various problems in clinical nursing settings.
BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCE I : NUR3304
This course explains and provides skills to the students in recognizing in influence of culture, experiences and behaviour of nurses as well as expectation of clients during interaction and treatment. The course also emphasizes on psychological reactions to disease and how these are to be managed by nurses.
BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCE III : NUR3306
This course provides students with an understanding of human personality as well as extending their knowledge to the impact of emotion on human behaviour. An overview of selected aspects of abnormal behaviour is included in preparation for subsequents clinical studies in Mental Health and Psychiatric Care.
THE CANCER AND HIV CLIENTS : NUR3505
This course focuses on the nursing of Cancer, HIV, and AIDS. It encompasses the pathophysiology and pathogenesis of Cancer, HIV and AIDS inclusive of several psychosocial issues related with these conditions. The students are given the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in nursing these problems in the clinical and community settings.
SOCIAL ISSUES : NUR3005
This course introduces students to Social Science and its related issues from the understanding of various concepts of social institutions inclusive of deviant behavior, socialization and stratification. It aims to further develop students’ knowledge about the nature, growth and functioning of human societies. This course strengthens internalization, direction and the required nursing roles in all aspects of care so as to maintain a high standard of service. Students are given an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills through problem based learning.
RESEARCH PROJECT : NUR3004B
This course provides final year students with the opportunity to focus their attention on a particular topic, process, or issue of significance that has arisen from the knowledge and insights gained during their professional and nursing practice-oriented courses. Students are required to develop a project in the form of a small research study into a health or nursing-related issue of particular interest and or significance.
TEACHING IN NURSING : NUR3002
This course equip students with beginning teaching skills so that, they may fulfill their teaching role effectively to clients, their families, colleagues, other health workers and the community.
PERSPECTIVES OF NURSING THEORIES : NUR3003
Students are introduced to the concepts and process that underpin contemporary nursing theory and its relationship to professional nursing practice. The opportunity to explore, critically reflect and evaluate on the various ways of knowing in nursing is provided. Students will also learn how to analyze and evaluate selected nursing theories in terms of their usefulness in guiding clinical nursing practice, education and research. The emphasis of this course will be on the relevance of each of the selected theories to professional nursing practice in Malaysia
ELDERY CARE : NUR3507
This course introduces students to the process of ageing and explores the implications of professional nursing care of the elderly people. This course focuses on the various critical nursing and health care provision issues related to ageing and their families on cares and society. These issues include physical, mental and emotional health, medications, multiple pathology, functional abilities and cognitive state.
PUBLIC HEALTH AND PUBLIC HEALTH COMMUNITY CARE : NUR3510
This course aims to strengthen students’ understanding to the development of health services and community health nursing. It also aims at enabling them to manage and provide comprehensive health care to clients in the community. Students will spend and 6 week attachment to a rural health training programme at the district health clinic in a rural area.
HEALTH PROGRAMMES AND COMMUNITY HEALTH CARE ISSUES : NUR3511
This course provides the students with knowledge and practical experience on the various health programmes and related services in the community. The aim is to enable them to assist individuals and families in managing social and other health related problems.
CRITICAL CARE I : NUR3516
This course introduces the students to basic principles of critical management and to their role as a member of the critical health service team. The focus is on the integration of theory to practice with a psychosocial approach in the fields of trauma, intensive care and haemodialysis. Students will be exposed to the management of medico-legal cases. CRITICAL CARE II : NUR3517 This course is the continuation of Critical Care I. Theories and practices in the Accident and Emergency and intensive care unit will be further strengthened. Students will also be exposed to the theoretical and practical aspects of Coronary Care. The focus on positive work attitude will be continued.
DOCTOR OF MEDICINE
INTRODUCTORY MEDICINE : SPK 3211 (YEAR 3)
The course encompasses good history taking and systematic examination of the central and peripheral nervous system, the respiratory system, the gastrointestinal system, the urinary system, the cardiovascular system, the endocrine system and the joints. Basic ward procedures such as performing venepuncture, setting up a drip and recording ECGs are also covered
HEALTH CARE OF THE ELDERLY : SPK 3221 (YEAR 3)
This course encompasses aging demography, assessment of elderly patients, principles of geriatric medicine, psychological problems in the elderly, falls, immobility and rehabilitation, death and dying. It also covers ethics and professionalism in managing the elderly as well as the importance of healthy ageing
MEDICAL RHEUMATOLOGY : SPK 3251 (YEAR 3)
This course covers the anatomy, physiology, pathogenesis and diseases related to joint system and connective tissue disorders such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathies and crystal arthropathies
COMMUNITY FOLLOW-UP : SPK 3821 (YEAR 4)
This course covers the impact of illness to the physical, social and psychological well being of the patient, their family and the community at large which is based on medical ethics and professionalism in the patient’s management. It also covers the involvement of external agencies in the aspect of patient care
SENIOR MEDICINE : SPK 4212 (YEAR 5)
The course encompasses finer aspects of history taking and physical examination, rational approach on investigation and management of clinical problems, therapeutic aspects of medical practice and therapeutic procedures in the wards
DERMATOLOGY : SPK 3231 (YEAR 5)
This course covers history taking from patients, physical examination and management of skin infections, sexually transmitted diseases and leprosy. It also covers the recognition of common, serious and life threatening skin diseases as well as exposure to diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Our aim in research is to search for specific answers in diseases in the fields of endocrinology, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, neurology, haematology, community health and dermatology. Our team of doctors, nurses, pharmacologists, scientists and other researchers strive to generate new knowledge from the research in our desire to become a centre of reference.
