On 27th April 2016 (Wednesday) a group of lecturer from the Department of Community Health (DCH), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) made a trip to visit to the National Cancer Institute (Institut Kanser Negara or IKN) in Putrajaya. One PhD candidate (PhD in Community Health) and two Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) students came along for the visit too. This program was organised and led by Associate Professor Dr Hejar Abdul Rahman, the Head Unit of Epidemiology in DCH FMHS UPM, as part of teaching the subject of epidemiology to postgraduate students. The main purpose of the visit was to know more about the institute, especially on the roles and responsibilities of the Cancer Registry Unit (CRU).

We arrived at IKN at about 9 am and was immediately ushered by Puan Safariza binti Bujang, the IKN Assistant Public Relation Officer to the office of CRU, which is on the top floor (Level 6) of the building complex. Welcome address was given by Dr Renuga a/p Kunchi Raman, Head Coordinator of CRU. Briefing on the unit was given by the CRU staff, Dr Putri Nureylia binti Amir.

We were informed that CRU IKN is data collection centre for patient with cancer, where such data will be analysed and relevant reports produced.  It is also the centre for National Cancer Registry (Kanser Registri Kebangsaan), the anchor point for information collection for all cancer cases in Malaysia. Data collected by this unit comes from various sources such as Pathology Department of government and private hospitals, National Registration Department of Malaysia (Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara), Health Informatics Center of Malaysia Ministry of Health, and Radiotherapy and Oncology Departments of government and private hospitals. Dr Putri also gave us information on the various objectives of CRU, the different kind of services provided there and, along with Dr Renuga and Dr Nabihah binti Ali (also CRU staff) answered a lot of our questions.
