Introduction
The Community Health Department was established to carry out teaching and research in the field of community health in various geographical settings, whether rural or urban. Activities are carried out with the focus on identifying factors that influence disease occurrence and ill health among groups in the community. Apart from that, the activities are aimed at preventing health problems from spreading through community participation.

In implementing programs and activities, the Department adopts an approach that perceives life of a community, which also includes the health of its members and which is essentially influenced by every aspect of life itself; in total includes the physical, social and cultural environment. Present day community health is not only directed at disease only, but that it has evolved rapidly to include wellness. Therefore community health has to be seen as something holistic and integrated.

In attempts to understand community health various issues and areas of services have to be investigated since the health of individuals and communities is influenced by collective behavior, attitudes, and beliefs. So are the consequences, are collective in nature and not only affect the individuals. In recognizing that any community-based activity changes with the technology and social values, approaches and strategies that are used to meet the Department’s objectives have to be appropriate with particular time and situations.

Since 1st June, this department has been headed by Dr. Hejar Abd. Rahman who replaced A. P. Mohd. Yunus Abdullah who headed
the Department for 6 years.

Family Medicine
The Family Medicine Unit was initially known as the Primary Medical Care Unit when it was established in May 1999 as one of the seven units of the Department of Community Health. The Unit’s name was later changed to Family Medicine Unit in July 2000, and was then headed by Dr Zaiton Ahmad until May 2005. Associate Professor Dr Sherina Mohd. Sidik was appointed as head taking over from Dr Zaiton Ahmad who was appointed the Deputy Director of the Institute of Gerontology, UPM. By year 2010, the unit is expected to grow in strength with the addition of four new lecturers.

The Unit aims to excel in teaching, research and professional consultancy services. Its main objectives is to provide medical graduates who will excel in the field of family medicine and general practice, and are able to provide excellent clinical services to the community.

Two major projects carried out during the year are ‘Assessment of Physical, Mental and Social Well Being of Urban Poor in Selangor’, and ‘Mental Health Status of Women aged 29-59 years: Physiological and Emotional Health Perspective.
