The department was formed in 1998 in time for the starting of clinical training for the university’s first batch of medical students.

Initially located on the 8th floor of Grand Seasons, opposite GHKL on Jalan Pahang, it moved to the present location at the College of Nursing Complex at Hospital Kuala Lumpur in 2001, occupying the first block. The department office is located on the first floor, together with the rooms for lecturers from general surgery, ophthalmology and anesthesia, while lecturers from orthopedics and otorhinolaryngology, have their rooms on the second floor.

Following its establishment, the department was headed by Associate Professor Dr Fahmi Abdul Karim (5th July – 30th June 2000), before the post was taken over by Professor Dr Yunus Gul (1st July 2000 – 31st May 2002). Following the appointment of Professor Yunus to the post of Deputy Dean, the headship was handed to Dato’ Professor Dr Selvarajah till 14th March 2003. Assoc. Prof Dr Yushak headed the department from 15 March 2003 till 14 October 2004. Currently, Associate Professor Dato’ Dr K Selva Kumar is the Acting Head.

The department consists of five clinical units, namely:
1. General Surgery
2. Anesthesia
3. Ophthalmology
4 . Otorhinolaryngology (ORL)
