| The
Bachelor of Science Programme (Bio-medical Science) began
in the 1993/1994 academic session under the Bio-medical
Science Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and
Animal Science. This department later merged with the
Medical Science and the Nutrition and Community Health
departments to form the Medical and Health Science Department
on August 1st, 1996.
This is one of the programmes at first degree level offered
by UPM and has been producing graduates since 1996. This
programme received an accreditation from the Institute
of Biomedical Sciences, United Kingdom for five years
from 1997 until 2001. This programme is one of the degree
programmes offered by the Medical and Health Science Faculty.
The Bachelor of Science Programme (Bio-medical Science)
is a combination of pre-clinical science and para-clinical
research.
The programme structure includes anatomy, physiology,
bio-technology, molecular biology, cytogenetic, pharmacology,
toxicology, microbiology and other sub-field of bio-medical
science. This programme emphasises the use of the latest
bio-medical technology in human research with courses
such as laboratory diagnosis on diseases, safety and controls
on food quality and pharmaceutical products apart from
training students to be able to conduct research in bio-medicine.
This is a three year programme and is aimed at producing
graduates skillful and knowledgeable in the latest research,
laboratory diagnostic methods and laboratory management
in hospitals and industry. This programme carries a credit
load of 108 hours. The credit load comes from liberal
studies or university courses such as Malaysian Studies,
core courses such as anatomy and pharmacology and elective
courses such as medical bio-technology. Students are also
required to undergo off-campus practicum training for
eight weeks in government and private hospital laboratories.
