ANAESTHESIOLOGY AND INTENSIVE CARE DEPARTMENT
Background and History of the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care
The Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care began as Anaesthesiology Unit under the Department of Surgery in 1999 where our lecturers mainly contributed to the faculty’s Doctor of Medicine Programme through conducting the Anaesthesiology Posting and Basic Life Support Course. In 2013 the unit started its Master in Medicine (Anaesthesiology) Programme and to date has managed 57 students, including 11 graduates who now functions as specialist anaesthetists in Ministry of Health hospitals and UPM Teaching Hospital (HPUPM). This programme has developed into a competitive entity in producing specialists at par with those from other universities. At the hospital level the department offers anaesthesia services in the operating theatres, critical care services in the intensive care unit, anaesthesia clinic services preoperatively together with acute pain service postoperatively, and also remote anaesthesia services such as for radiological intervention and electroconvulsive therapy.
