DIETETICS DEPARTMENT
Background and History of the Department of Dietetics
The Department of Dietetics (JD) started as one of the units in the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Putra Malaysia. The Dietetics Unit is an academic entity that offers a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics program starting in the 2005/2006 session as well as postgraduate programs at the Masters and Doctor of Philosophy levels in the field of Clinical Nutrition. This program is one of the competent and viable programs, and in turn became a popular choice among students to further their studies based on the high rate of admission demand today.
The dietetics unit has been upgraded to the Department of Dietetics starting October 1, 2020 after the Universiti Putra Malaysia Teaching Hospital (HPUPM) was built and fully operational. At HPUPM, the Department of Dietetics has developed into one of the important branches of academic functions where all lecturers and dietetics officers are directly involved in patient services, research, and practical trainings especially for students from the Bachelor of Science in Dietetics program. The Department of Dietetics plays an important role in supporting clinical services in hospitals by offering food services to in -ward patients and clinical dietetic services to inpatients and outpatients.
In addition, based on stakeholder feedback and the high recruitment rate of faculty graduates in the industry sector compared to graduates of similar programs from other public institutions of higher learning, proves that this program has also grown and become one of the best Bachelor of Dietetic Science programs in Malaysia.
