Our department is involved in the teaching and learning of undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes.
Undergraduate Program : Doctor of Medicine (MD)
Senior Orthopaedic (MDR 3211)
In the fifth year, ( Semester IX & X ) the students will be posted to the Orthopedics Module. The rotation is of 6 weeks duration. The teaching in the orthopedics course will consist of lectures, seminars, bedside teaching, ward rounds, clinical sessions in Orthopedics outpatient clinic and observing procedures in operation theatres. Students are also expected to perform ward work under supervision. During this rotation, the student will also be posted to the Accident & Emergency, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and Orthotic Departments. Students will be supervised by the lecturers from the Orthopedics Unit, UPM and Medical Officers/ Specialists/Consultants of Institute Orthopedics and Traumatology, Hospital Kuala Lumpur. Introductory Orthopaedic (MDR 3210)
In the third year, students will be introduced to the Orthopedic Posting. The rotation is of 3 weeks duration. This basic knowledge will be further consolidated by 10 weeks of Musculoskeletal Disorder and Disability Posting scheduled when these students are in the final year of their medical course. This course will encompass basic history taking of orthopaedic patients based on the part of the limb involved and physical examination of the musculoskeletal system. It will also cover the approach of accurate diagnosis and relevant investigations. Students will be supervised by the lecturers from the Orthopedic Unit, UPM and by House Officers/Medical Officers/Specialists/Consultants of the Orthopedics Department, Hospital Serdang. Postgraduate Program : Master of Surgery (Orthopaedic)
The Masters of Surgery (Orthopaedic) was started in 2013. This is a conjoint programme between universities in Malaysia ie Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). This programme is an on-job postgraduate training programme for a minimum of 4 years and maximum of 7 years. It aims at producing a competent Orthopaedic Specialist. This programme is implemented in 3 phase ie Phase I (Year 1), Phase II (Year 2 and 3) and Phase III (Year 4). It is currently conducted as an open and close system.
Phase II of the programme is 2 years duration. During the 2nd year, they need to undergo 6 months elective posting. During 3rd year, candidates will undergo training at MOH accredited hospitals. At the end of Phase II, candidates must obtain a pass in the Part II Professional Examination before being allowed to progress to Year 4.
Candidates in Year 4 will continue training in campus and Hospital Serdang. Candidates are required to submit and pass a thesis, case report at the end of Phase III. They are required to pass the Professional Exam III in order to be awarded the Master Of Surgery (Orthopaedic).
