NUTRITION DEPARTMENT
BACKGROUND
Nutrition and lifestyle plays an important role not only in healthcare, but also in the prevention and management of disease. Along with the rapid social and economic growth in Malaysia, lifestyle, diet and physical activity levels of society has also experienced changes from time to time. These changes affect the pattern of morbidity and mortality rates in Malaysia, mostly due to diet related diseases, disorders, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. Since today's society has a higher level of health awareness, and ready access to information from electronic and print media, it is important to ensure that people are receiving accurate information on health, diet and nutrition. Therefore, it is important for institutions of higher learning to act more proactively in disseminating accurate information on health as well as developing the skills and knowledge in these areas particularly in the scope of nutrition , both nationally and internationally.
History of the Department
The Department of Nutrition and Community Health, Universiti Putra Malaysia was established on 1 April 1992 in conjunction with the formation of the Faculty of Human Ecology. On 1 August 1996, the Department of Biomedicine together with Department of Nutrition and Community Health formed the Faculty of Biomedical and Health Sciences. On May 1st, 1999, the department changed name to the Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences. After the 1st. October 2020, the department is known as the Department of Nutrition, led by Prof. Dr. Norhasmah Sulaiman as the Head of Department.
